861,513. Nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Nov. 26, 1958 [Nov. 26, 1957], No. 38093/58. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor comprises a single vessel serving both as the pressure vessel and the biological shield, the vessel being of concrete subjected to centripetal forces in excess of the forces produced by the medium under pressure contained by the vessel. Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section of a vessel for a reactor having horizontal channels, the vessel comprising a concrete cylindrical body 1 closed by two hemispherical cupolas 2, 3 also of concrete and being lined by a lining 4 of sheet steel. The vessel is stressed by cables 5 alternately anchored on one face of the cylinder and on the other and tensioned at the end situated at the opposite end face; the axes of the cables are alternately disposed in two cylindrical layers. As shown in Fig. 2, which is a transverse section, the vessel has a massive base 10 stressed by cables 16 and by cables 17 which encircle the body 1 and stress it radially. To reduce the friction between cables 17 and the body 1, the body 1 is provided with slide tracks (not shown) on which are situated slide shoes in which the cables rest. The interior of the body 1 is provided with two plane faces 14, 15 to support the moderator block (not shown), and the body is penetrated by bores 9 for the passage of control rods.
