Abstract
877,383. Nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 18, 1958 [July 26, 1957], No. 23748/57. Class 39(4). A concrete biological shield for a nuclear reactor comprises a thick outer part and a thin inner part separated by a coolant space, the inner part acting also as a thermal shield. A reactor pressure vessel is enclosed by a concrete shield 2 and an inner shield of concrete blocks 5. Coolant gas, e.g. air, is passed through the space between the two shields. Where reactor coolant CO 2 ducts pass through the shields the blocks 5 are replaced by mild steel plates 6 (Fig. 2) fastened to adjacent blocks by flexible seals 16; sleeves 17 anchored to the outer shield fit tightly in the plates 6. Flexible seals are also used between adjacent blocks 5 and where brackets 20 support the inner shield at its corners from the outer shield. Cruciform seals are used at the junctions of four blocks. The inner shield is replaced by a steel plate 7 where control rod and fuel tubes pass through it.
