Abstract

840,882. Nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 6, 1957 [Feb. 9, 1956], No. 4143/56. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor, the fuel elements are withdrawn downwards from the moderator. As shown, graphite core 10 is supported inside a spherical pressure vessel 15 and cooling gas is passed vertically upwards through it. The control rod operating means 26 are above the reactor and a biological shield 13 surrounds the pressure vessel. Each fuel element channel 16, is aligned with a tube 17 extending from the pressure vessel to discharge surface 18. The end of each tube 17 is sealed with a cover plate 21 and shield plug 20 and guide rods 22 extend between 16 and 17.
