Abstract

894,407. Reactor pressure vessels. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. May 6, 1960 [Feb. 6, 1959], No. 4220/59. Class 39(4) The upper part of a nuclear reactor pressure vessel is provided with thermal insulation at its inner surface consisting of alternate layers of sheet metal and expanded metal, both of stainless steel. The insulation also covers the surfaces of the charge and control rod tubes which penetrate into the pressure vessel. As shown, the tube 55 is welded into the pressure vessel at 6 and is encircled by the insulating sleeve 12. The latter is formed of a backing sheet 7 and insulating layers 9, 10. Buckling of the insulating layer is prevented by the L- shaped supports 30. Insulating flange 13 is bolted to the pressure vessel and welded to 12 at 32. The cover plate 33 is bolted to 55 by bolts 36 and welded to sheet 7. The gap between the charge tube 40 and tube 55 is closed by ring 41 secured by bolt 42. Specification 891,353 is referred to.
