Abstract

1,115,476. Reactor pressure vessels. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 23 Nov., 1965 [25 Nov., 1964], No. 47898/64. Heading G6C. The access duct through a gas-cooled nuclear reactor concrete pressure vessel is provided with both solid heat insulation and water cooling to limit the concrete temperature rise due to reactor coolant gas in the duct. The duct has an inner sleeve which is secured to the outer sleeve so as to permit thermally induced axial dimension changes. The annular space between the inner and outer sleeves is filled with granular or fibrous heat-insulating material which is capable of accommodating the dimension changes. To prevent neutron streaming a section of the annular space is filled with steel shot. The water cooling is applied to the outer surfaces of the outer sleeve.
