Abstract

1388860 Reactor pressure vessels BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd 20 Nov 1972 [19 Nov 1971] 53882/71 Heading G6C A reactor pressure vessel wall has, on its internal surface, a thermally-insulating lining 12 secured in position by cover plates 13 each of which is secured to adjacent cover plates by means of links 16 each of which comprises two attachment portions fixed rigidly to the cover plate and a connecting portion extending between the attachment portions, the connecting portion being deformable to permit thermal movements in the general plane of the cover plates but resistant to such movement normal to that plane. Some or all of the plates 13 are also retained by one or more studs 14, secured to the wall, each of which receives a nut 15 to compress the plate against the lining 12. The pressure vessel wall is of concrete and is additionally lined by a metal membrane 11. The links, of which many forms and arrangements are described, may connect each plate 13 to either four or eight adjacent plates. The links 16 comprise strip material which is secured edge-on to the cover plates to provide the required resiliency and rigidity in the respective directions mentioned. The natural frequency of resonant vibration of the links, due to the form and dimensions of the links, are chosen so as to avoid resonance with acoustic energy in the circulating gas coolant.
