Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A flange joint for interconnecting sections of the wall 3 of a spherical or cylindrical pressure vessel comprises, as shown in Fig. 9, two flanges 1, 2 perpendicular to the respective wall sections, which flanges are held together by bolts 6 and arranged to directly contact each other at the end portions at that side of the wall 3 where the higher pressure prevails, the remaining portions being interspaced. The axial distance between the two flange edges at that side of the wall 3 where the lower pressure prevails is selected in such a manner in relation to the pressure difference across the wall 3 that upon completed tightening of the bolts 6, the flanges 1, 2 contact each other at their last-mentioned edges via a spacer 9 in such a relative position that, in each junction between the wall 3 and a flange, the deformation of the flange caused by the tightened bolts generates a mechanical stress state the axial bending component of which is opposite to the corresponding component of the stress state generated in each junction by the pressure difference across the wall 3. The spacer 9 is preferably constituted by a metal ring. In alternative embodiments, the flanges have integral projections which engage each other directly without an intervening spacer upon completed tightening of the bolts, or the two surfaces of the flanges facing each other diverge in the outward radial direction.
