Abstract

823,758. Pipe joints. CHEMETRON CORPORATION [formerly NATIONAL CYLINDER GAS CO.]. Aug. 22, 1957 [Aug. 28, 1956], No. 26594/57. Class 99(1). A steel flange 11 of a pipe joint has a tapered face 11a which on being secured to a cast iron flange 10a exerts a progressive sealing force on an interposed gasket 15 from its bore face 15a outwards. To allow flexure when tightening bolts 16, the flange 11 is thinner than the opposing flange and the tapered face is inclined to the normal of the pipe axis at an angle of from ¢ to 4 degrees. The gasket 15 made of compressed asbestos, natural or synthetic rubber or the like, is thin and has flat parallel faces and may extend from the pipe bore to or beyond the bolts. On tightening the bolts the flange 10a negligibly deflects whereas flange 11 is moved towards it and may deflect through an angle nearly equal to its original taper and may deform so as to exceed the elastic limit of the material. The steel flange 11 is constructed so that the ratio of its radial width to its thickness is from 4¢ to 5 and is provided with a bevelled short neck 11b for welding at 25 to a pipe 12.
