783,397. Pipe joints. DUNKEL, Dr. M., [trading as LEYBOLD'S NACHFOLGER, E.]. Jan. 17, 1956 [Jan. 17, 1955], No. 1561/56. Class 99(1). In a vacuum-tight joint between pipes 10, 11 a distance ring 16 disposed between the opposed end faces of flanges 12, 13 of the pipes is provided with a projection 17, extending into the bore of the pipe 11, and a resilient sealing ring 19 located externally of the ring 16 has, in the unstressed state thereof, a height greater than that of the ring. When the flanges are drawn towards each other, e.g.-by bolts or a clamping ring 20, the ring 19 is compressed to a height h equal to that of the ring 16 but is free to expand in the radial direction. As shown in Fig. 1, the ring 16 has a groove 18 for reception of the ring 19 which is circular in cross-section. In a modification, the ring 16, Fig. 2, has a peripheral rib 21 of rectangular cross-section on to which the ring 19a is moulded.
