Abstract

849,123. Pipe &c. joints. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 11, 1959 [Feb. 12, 1958], No. 4663/58. Class 99(1). A joint between two members comprises plane end surfaces thereof held in contact by clamping means having a thermal expansion coefficient different from at least one of the members, the clamping pressure being applied to the said one member substantially in the contact plane of the surfaces. As shown in Fig. 4, a pipe 22<SP>1</SP> of graphite and a pipe 23<SP>1</SP> of steel have flanges 241, 251 and are clamped together by bolts 26<SP>1</SP>, the sealing plane of the pipes and the plane of the clamping pressure coinciding at the plane CC. In modifications (a) a graphite pipe 1, Fig. 1, is formed with an annular recess 9 for reception of a split, graphite sleeve 4, the sleeve being held in position by and having axial pressure exerted thereon by a graphite sleeve 3 engaged by a steel clamping ring 5 ; bolts 8 pass through the ring 5 and the flange 6 of a steel pipe 7 to apply pressure to the flange 22 of the sleeve 3 and in the plane A-A of the pipe ends, and (b) two pipes of the same material, e.g. graphite or of two materials having different coefficients of thermal expansion, each have flanges comprising three 60 degree sectors so that the flanges can be interleaved and pressure is applied to the flanges by steel clamping rings and bolts. The device may be applied to fastening a plate over an aperture in a vessel, or joining a pipe to a vessel.
