Abstract

997,765. Pipe joints. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 23, 1964 [July 2,1963], No. 26279/63. Heading F2G. A method of making a joint between two tubular members 1, 2 having annular sealing faces 3, 5 with a series of concentric grooves of specific geometrical form, comprises assembling the members with a soft metal gasket 7 between the faces and a loose locating ring 16 encircling the gasket, and compressing the gasket by controlled external clamping to effect a seal between the faces. As shown, the pipes 1, 2 have flanges 8, 9 formed with grooves of British Association screw-thread form and providing seats for rings 12, 15 clamped together by bolts 17 having counterbored rounded ends 20 used in conjunction with the ball-end attachments of a micrometer which measures the extension of the bolts when the latter are tightened until a predetermined strain thereon is reached.
