Abstract

922,068. Bolted joints. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 22, 1962 [Feb. 1, 1961], No. 3800/61. Class 83 (4). A joint between tensioned plates comprises a pair of abutting flanges secured together by fastening means which pass between the abutting faces of the flange members at the line of intersection of said faces with the neutral surface of the flanged members. A pressure vessel comprises two parts 1, 2, to each of which is welded a forging 5, 6. Each forging has a series of part-cylindrical projections 9 which are inclined at 30 degrees to the neutral surface A-A of the forgings. A bolt 11 passes through a clearance hole 10 in one forging into a tapped hole 15 in the other forging. If the holes 15 are blind, a gasket 18 is used, and if the holes 15 are open at both ends a seal weld 16 is provided between the two forgings, and at 17 around the bolt-head.
