Abstract

1,034,052. Pipe coupling; joint making packing. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Jan. 28, 1964 [Feb. 6, 1963], No. 3670/64. Headings F2B and F2G. A coupling for a vacuum system comprises a pair of flange members adapted for movement relative to each other, a sealing gasket positioned between said flange members, each of the flange members having a face with a bevelled portion at an angle of between 55 degrees and 75 degrees to the direction of movement of the flanges, and separated from each other by the gaskets and trapping means forming, with the bevelled portions, a cavity adapted to trap the sealing gasket upon relative movement of the flange members. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) the gasket is held between the bevelled portions 20 of the flanges 11 and a back-up ring 23 contained in recesses in each of the flanges. The flanges are held together by bolts passing through the flanges and nuts attached to the bolts or bolts passing through one flange and screwing into the other. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2) the back-up ring is replaced by a second flange 26 on one of the flange members, which is receivable in a recess in the other flange member when the coupling is tightened. In this embodiment the flanges 11<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP> are held together by bolts engaging clamps 32. The vacuum system is preferably welded to the flanges and the gaskets may be copper wire with its ends joined by cold welding.
