Abstract
1305516 Welded pipe joints P BOER EN ZOON 1 July 1971 30795/71 Heading F2G [Also in Division B3] A method of joining metal pipes 1, 6 having a protective lining 15 and at least one of the pipes having a recess filled with protective material at the inner edge of its end face comprises abutting the ends of the pipes and welding together external sleeve-like connecting members 3, 8 which are secured to respective pipes at their outer ends, the sleeves 3, 8 being located so that prior to welding their juxtaposed ends are spaced slightly. A shrinkage stress develops in the weld 19 on cooling which urges the pipe ends together and compresses the protective material in the abutting recesses to provide a leak-tight joint. An annular gap 5, 11 is provided by the sleeves 3, 8 with the outer surface of the pipe 6 which prevents the lining 15 from being damaged when the weld 19 is made.
