Abstract

1366191 Welding by fusion B L O'BRIEN and H P O'BRIEN 21 Feb 1972 [8 March 1971] 7919/72 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] In a method of joining pipe sections 14 to form a riser, which is connectible to a subaqueous pipe-line (18, see Division F2), gripper arms 74 are controlled by rams 93 and have jaws 84 with studs 62 projecting into holes in the flanges 60 of a pipe section, to enable sections 14 to be abutted during welding. A crane lowers a spigot end 58a of an upper pipe section into the flanged end 56 of a lower section held in the grippers. Weld material is then melted into the V-shaped groove 214. A welder is lowered, on a platform, to weld a V-shaped groove 232, which is melted in another constructional form (Fig. 5, not shown).
