Abstract

1405117 Welding by fusion KAWASAKI JUKOGYO KK 11 Oct 1972 [1 Nov 1971] 46990/72 Heading B3R In progressively butt-welding together plates 7 from one end of a seam to the other, the plates are forcibly held together adjacent said other end by externally applied forces to prevent distortion of the plates and cracking of the seam and welding is effected from one side by three consumable electrodes spaced apart in the direction of the seam, the spacing between adjacent electrodes being adjustable and so selected as to further prevent said seam cracking. As shown, plates 7 are forced together adjacent said other end as by hydraulic rams 9 or by a loading means and wedge acting on weld run-out tabs 8 attached to said plates. In Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), the rams act on parallel vertical plates respectively attached to said plates 7. In Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) the plates 7 are together clamped down by rams.
