A cylindrical vessel or pipe comprises a plurality of axially extending elements welded together at their adjacent circumferentially extending ends and the adjacent ends are tapered so that the weld thickness is less than the thickness of the elements intermediate the ends. The vessels or pipes may be made of, for example, mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium.
