Abstract

1,068,098. Welding by fusion. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Dec. 9. 1965 [Dec.10, 1964], No. 50400/64. Heading B3R. In a heat exchanger having straight tubes (12), Fig. 1 (not shown), the ends of which penetrate into or pass through holes in tube plates (13, 14), the tubes (12) are internally welded adjacent the inner surfaces of the tube plates by welds (18) which penetrate through the metal of the tubes (12). The ends of the tubes are seal welded by the same torch as forms the welds (18). The torch is as described in Specification 913,207 or 934,485. The tubes and plates are of mild or stainless steel. In a modification the tubes (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), penetrate most of the way through holes in the plate (32) and their ends abut against and are welded to shoulders (42) formed adjacent the outer surfaces of the plates.
