Abstract

1,173,825. Making furnace muffles; welding by fusion; brazing. BTU ENG. CORP. 29 Sept., 1967 [3 Oct., 1966], No. 44407/67. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F4] A fluid-jacketed furnace muffle is formed by bending sheets of stainless steel or other heatresistant metal to form an inner shell 16 and outer shell 22 with edge parts 20a, 20b and 24a, 24b. The shells are united by welding the four edges together by an arc process, a non- consumable electrode being used to form an arc in an inert atmosphere, e.g. helium. Depressions 38 formed in the outer shell are welded to the inner shell at poles in the bottom of the depressions. Inlet and outlet pipes for coolant are welded to the outer shell, and the ends of the spaces between the shells are closed by end plates welded to the jacket. The welds may be formed by a consumable wire process, or the join may be brazed.
