Abstract

1,222,829. Welding by pressure and fusion. ROSE, DOWNS & THOMPSON Ltd. 25 Nov., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967], No. 54752/67. Heading B3R. In securing a metal stay to two spaced apart overlapped metal parts an end portion of the stay is passed through an opening in one of the parts so that the stay abuts the other part, the stay is rotated under axial pressure to friction weld to the other part and the stay is welded to the part having the opening therein. Two metal plates 1, 2, forming the double wall of an industrial cooker, in which double wall heated fluid is circulated, are spaced apart by a continuous metal spacer secured to the plates at their edges and are spaced apart in the space defined by the spacer by support stays. An opening 4 is provided in metal plate 1 and a cylindrical stud 5, Fig. 1, passed through the opening mounted in a chuck and rotated under pressure against the plate 2. The end 5<SP>1</SP> of the stud is thus friction welded to the plate 2 and then the stud welded by electric arc or gas welding to plate 1 to close the opening 4. The stud may have an enlarged head 6, Fig. 2, which is friction welded to the plate 1 simultaneously with the friction welding of end 5<SP>1</SP> plate 2. The studs shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may be of tubular rather than solid so that an internal surface may be gripped by the chuck. Increased pressure for upset may be applied in such cases.
