Abstract

1,172,040. Welding by fusion. GESELLSCHAPT FUER KERNFORSCHUNG m.b.H. 19 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 57704/67. Heading B3R. In a welded joint between a closure plug 2 and a tube 1, the plug 2 has a portion 3 fitting within the tube 1 and terminating at a flange 4 of external diameter less than the external diameter of the tube 1 and of width substantially equal to the wall thickness of the tube 1 and welding is effected by guiding an arc welding electrode along a path aligned with the free peripheral edge of the end face 6 of the flange 4 opposite to the end face 5 of the flange which engages the end of the tube 1. Gas shielded non-consumable electrode arc welding is used. The plug 2 is of a metal which conducts heat less well than the metal of the tube 1. The plug 2 which may be the closure plug of a fuel element has a groove 7 of depth approximately equal to twice the wall thickness of the tube 1.
