Abstract

1,099,025. Welding by fusion. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. March 15, 1965 [March 16, 1964], No. 10931/65. Heading B3R. [Also in Division G6] A tapered member 4 is interlocked in a mating tapered bore 8 in a magnesium or magnesium alloy member 2, and the joint is made by forming a weld deposit 11 in an annular recess 9 in the member 2. To seal a thermocouple 1 in the sheath 2 of a nuclear fuel element, the thermocouple 1 is brazed to a plug 3 which is electron beam welded to the tapered member 4, e.g. stainless steel, nickel, a nickel-chromiumiron alloy or a zirconium alloy. A stopper 5 is brazed to the plug 3. The recess is filled by argon shielded arc-welding using a filler wire of a magnesium-manganese or magnesiumzirconium alloy.
