[Also in Division B3] The stainless steel sheath 1 of a thermocouple is sealed in the magnesium alloy end cap 4 of a fuel element sheath 3 by fitting a tapered plug 5 consisting of at least 10% nickel in a tapered aperture in the end cap 4 and induction heating at 530‹ C. in argon until a nickel-magnesium eutectic weld is formed. The sheath 1 of the thermocouple is brazed to the plug 5 which consists of nickel or an alloy of nickel and iron or chromum. The end cap is of magnesium-manganese alloy.
