Abstract
554,541. Making pressure vessels. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Jan. 6, 1942, No. 184. Convention date, Jan. 8, 1941. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-A pressure vessel for use in manufactures involving corrosive fluid and high temperature and pressure conditions comprises a cylindrical laminated shell the laminae or groups of laminae of which are united with a head by different butt welds so arranged that a butt weld on any lamina or group of laminae is laterally displaced from any butt weld on another lamina or group of laminae. A lamina 12 of corrosion resisting metal such as stainless steel to form the inside of the vessel is first formed by bending and welding and is then aligned with the portion A, B, of the stepped surfaces of preferably unitary forged and machined steel heads 10, 11, and weld metal deposited therein at 26. A filler ring 20 may then be placed over each weld 26 and welded at 28 to the heads whereupon a shorter lamina 14 is applied and welded at 30 to the ring 20. Filler rings 18 are then applied to cover the welds 30, 28 and rings 20 and are welded at 22 to the heads and a lamina 16 is then applied and welded at 24. If desired the laminae 12, 14, 16 may be applied to each other before any weld is effected. In a modification each lamina is replaced by a pair of thinner laminae such as 62, 64, each laminae of each pair being welded in succession to the heads. In a further modification the laminae 12, 41, 40, Fig. 3, may be applied and welded in succession directly to the heads. Each lamina in this case also may be replaced by a pair of thinner laminae successively welded to the heads.
