Abstract
570,911. Stay bolts. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd., and DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Dec. 15, 1943, No. 21039. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1942. [Class 123 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] Stay bolts for the fire boxes of locomotive and marine boilers and for other heat exchange apparatus are made an easy screwed fit in the plates and are hollow at the ends to receive a charge of high explosive by which the ends are firmly expanded into a fluid tight union with the plates. The explosive charge is preferably contained in a capsule 30, particularly if the stay bolt has a tell tale hole drilled either partly or wholly through it. After the explosion the end may be riveted over. The centre part of the stay bolts may be plain and slightly reduced in diameter or the bolts may be threaded throughout and reduced slightly by removing the threads in proximity to the plates. The bolts may be of aluminium, nickel or copper, a nickel-copper alloy having two parts of nickel to one of copper, or a chromium-nickel austenitic steel of the 18 per cent. chromium, 8 per cent. nickel type.
