[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [See also Group XVII] Uniting by fusion.-A metal container provided with a protective metal lining, e.g. of a chromium-nickel-steel alloy containing 4- 40 per cent of nickel and 45 to 6 per cent of chromium, consisting of at least two parts welded together and to the container wall along their adjacent edges so as to leave an interspace divided into sub-interspaces so that the interspace may be supplied with air or liquid under pressure for testing the soundness of the lining and wall, is made by forming grooves or channels in the container wall beneath the edge welds, the grooves being covered by sheet metal pieces so as to leave a connecting space between the parts in order that testing fluid may be supplied at one point to pass into all or a number of subinterspaces. A lining consisting of two parts bl, b2 which are also fusion welded to the wall A through holes b<3> with chemically resistant weld metal, have their adjacent edges overlapping at one or more points one or more pieces of sheet metal C, which are welded to the wall over transverse grooves a<2> therein. The edges are then fusion welded at b<4> with chemically resistant metal leaving communication between the under sides of the linings at a<2>, so that the testing fluid may be applied at one point such as a<1>. The outer edges of the lining are attached by fillet welds. Two convex lining halves b<6>, b<7> and six segmental lining pieces b<10> may be similarly welded to the bottom of the container.
