Abstract
905,419. Welding by fusion; jointing. SULZER FRERES S.A. March 1, 1961 [Aug. 18, 1960], No. 7537/61. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] A pressure-tight joint between an austenitic member and an austenitically-plated ferritic member is formed by mechanically connecting the austenitic and ferritic members and welding the austenitic member to the plating. An austenitic tube or bush 3, Fig. 1, is threaded into a ferritic plate 1, the austenitic plating 2 of which is sealed to the tube 3 by a weld 5. An annular gap 6 behind the weld 5 prevents transmission of stress to the weld 5. As shown on the left-hand side of Fig. 2, an austenitic tube 3 is threaded into a ferritic sleeve 7 secured by welds 8, 9 to a ferritic plate 1. The austenitic plating 2 is sealed to the tube 3 by welds 10, 10<SP>1</SP>. A further seal weld may be formed between the other end of the sleeve 7 and the tube 3. As shown on the right-hand side of Fig. 2, the sleeve 7 is on an austenitic bush 11 welded to a tube 15 and having a flange 12 joined by a weld 13 to the plating 2. An austenitic backing ring 14 prevents contamination of the weld 13.
