Abstract
874,271. Welding by fusion. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 8, 1959 [June 3, 1958], No. 17648/58. Class 83 (4). In making a welded joint between zirconium and stainless iron or mild steel, vanadium and niobium or vanadium and titanium are interposed between the zirconium and the stainless iron or mild steel, the vanadium being adjacent the stainless iron or mild steel and the niobium or titanium being adjacent the zirconium. Stainless iron is a ferritic alloy containing 3-28% chromium and less than 0.1% carbon. Argon shielded arc-welding with an argon backing is used to weld the members together. To weld a zirconium pipe to a pipe of mild steel a niobium or titanium washer is welded to the zirconium pipe and a vanadium washer is welded to the mild steel. The joint is completed by welding the two washers.
