1,166,435. High vacuum joints. A. V. BALITSKY, N. I. PENKIN, L. A. FILATOVSKY, N. I. GAVRILOV and R. E. RYBCHINSKY. 23 Jan., 1968, No. 3417/68. Heading F2G. In a flanged joint one flange 1, Fig. 1 is endless and has an endless recess 5 or has a plurality of recesses to receive respectively an endless projecting member 7, or projecting pins (12), Fig. 2 (not shown), a sealing member 9 being held in the sealing position by the projecting members so that as the two flanges are tightened together, the flanges compress the sealing member and push the projecting members into their recesses. The projecting member 7 is a split-ring installed on temporary mounting supports 6 and expanded into contact with the flange by a metal wedge 8. A wire seal 9, e.g. of copper or nickel, is pulled on this temporary projection and the temporary supports 6 are removed so that the member 7 and seal 9 are held in position by friction until the flanges are tightened together. The individual projecting pins (12) are used on non- circular flanges e.g. rectangular.
