Abstract

1,061,419. Joint making packing; pipe joints. MULLARDLtd. Aug. 23, 1965 [Aug. 27, 1964], No. 35122/64. Headings F2B and F2G. A gasket for use between joint flanges 6 in a vacuum system comprises a ductile sealing washer 3 peripherally connected to a plate-like carrier 1. A gold sealing washer 3 is secured to the inner ends of radial arms 2 of a stainless steel carrier. The thickness 4 of the carrier is less than that 5 of the washer and in use, the gasket is loca- ted by the joint bolts passing through the spaces (6, Fig. 1) between the arms 2. In a modification (Fig. 3), a paper carrier (7) having bolt holes (8) therein has a gold sealing washer (9) secured to its inner periphery by an adhesive and strip steel shims (10) located on its surface. In use, the shims limit the compression of the washer (9) and the carrier (7) may be destroyed by heat applied at a temperature insufficient to damage the washer.
