Abstract

1,207,420. Pipe joints. SMITH & JOHNSON (SALES) Ltd. 3 June, 1969 [4 June, 1968], No. 26425/68. Heading F2G. A pipe joint comprises a pair of matching flanges 12 and 14 of pipes 10 which are provided with opposed annular frusto-conical surfaces 26, 32 and radially inner and outer annular axially-extending shoulders 48 and 50 defined by projections 28 and 34 on flanges 12 and 14 respectively, and an annular dished gasket 16 which is of initially rhomboidal radial crosssectional shape, Fig. 2 (not shown), between the frusto-conical surfaces and which is deformed to an 8-shaped configuration in radial crosssection when the flanges are drawn together, the crests of the S sealing against the frustoconical faces. The arrangement permits flexing of the joint under bending loads without the seal breaking down. The cross-section of the gasket is of rhomboidal shape with both pairs of opposite sides being inclined in the same direction relative to the gasket axis prior to deformation to provide sharp edges which engage in the roots of the corners between the frusto-conical faces and the shoulders. The flanges are drawn together by a clamp comprising half shells 17 and 18 and a surrounding bolted strap 20. The gasket is of a material, such as aluminium, copper or alloys thereof, or plastics, which is softer than the flanges, which may be of steel.
