Abstract

Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a pipe joint wherein the ends of pipes 2, 3 are pressed into direct sealing contact, the end of the pipe 3 is provided with a groove 4 concentric with the bore 6 of the pipe the inner surface 5 of the groove being tapered to form an annular spigot 7 and the outer surface 11 of the groove being curved, and the end of the pipe 2 has an annular ridge 8 for engagement in the groove. As shown, the outer surface of the groove is convex, and the ridge has a co-operating concave surface 10 of greater radius merging into a flange 12 embraced by a nut 1. An annular recess 14 is provided inside the pipe 2. The ridge has a sharp edge to firmly seal with the spigot 7 or a rounded end; alternatively, the end of the ridge is formed with a shoulder which bites into the spigot. When the nut is tightened the flange 12 and the ridge 8 are displaced inwardly to increase the area of contact between the ridge and surface 5; the spigot yields to pressure within the pipes and is forced into closer sealing contact with the ridge. The device joint may be applied to the flanged or screwed cover plates of casings or tanks.
