Abstract

1455735 Pipe couplings W HEFEL 17 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 26682/74 Heading F2G Pipes 11, 12 of different diameters are coupled and sealed with one end of the smaller diameter pipe 12 within the larger diameter pipe 11 as shown, by a coupling comprising connection piece 13 having a stepped bore and shoulder 19 which is fitted around the ends of pipes 11, 12; packing rings 14, 15 inserted into the two annular chambers defined by the respective pipe walls and internal surfaces of connecting piece 13 so that their respective outer ends protrude from these chambers; closure pieces 16, 17 fitted around pipes 11,12 respectively and abutting the protruding ends of packing rings 14, 15 and bolts 18 on which nuts 20 are tightened to draw closure pieces 16, 17 together to axially compress packing rings 14, 15 and so radially expand them within the chambers. By tightening nuts 23 on bolts 18 thrust ring 21 is pressed against shoulder 22 on the outer surface of connecting piece 13 allowing a greater pressure to be exerted on packing ring 14 than that exerted on packing ring 15 and hence on pipe 11 which may be of a pressure sensitive material, e.g. glass. In another embodiment a pipe coupling for connecting pipes of different diameter but of similar pressure resistant material does not have the thrust ring and its tightening nut.
