Abstract

836,002. Pipe joints. K.A.C. Ltd. April 17, 1957 [Jan. 17, 1956; Aug. 24, 1956], Nos. 1605/56 and 25999/56. Class 99(1). A pipe coupling for coupling pipes end to end or for securing an end fitting such as a stopper to a pipe comprises a frusto-conical sealing ring 20, Fig. 1, with an internal projection 21 and rim 18 which, when the ring is forced by tightening means 9 into a frusto-conical recess in the coupling member 5, is pressed tightly against the pipe to deform it slightly. In Fig. 1 two pipes are coupled together by the sleeve 5 having an annular lip 14 determining the positions of the pipe ends, the sealing rings 20 being forced into the packing recesses by screwed nuts 8, 9, acting through pressure rings 22, 23. The sealing rings 20 are of soft metal such as aluminium and their inner ends are turned in at 21 to grip the pipes. The rings may be cast solid or formed from frusto-conical tubing 26, Fig. 4, which is bent over to produce a hollow rim part 27. The sleeve part 5, Fig. 1, may be replaced by a part forming an end cap for a pipe. In a modification, Fig. 5, the pipes abut against a pressure ring 39 and the sealing rings are surrounded by collets 41 engaging frusto-conical surfaces of members 31, 36, which screw into one another to force the sealing rings to grip the pipes. The outer ends of the collets are split axially for resiliency.
