Abstract

978,899. Pipe couplings. IMPERIAL EASTMAN CORPORATION. Oct. 6, 1961 [Oct. 6, 1960], No. 35994/61. Addition to 813,715. Heading F2G. A metal joint fitting for use with a hard metallic tube T comprises in combination a body 11 having a recess concentric with the bore 15 of the body and formed with an outwardly widening frusto-conical seating surface 17, a nut 12 having a stepped bore including a camming surface 21 having a frusto-conical portion widening toward the body, there being co-operating screw-threads 18 on the body and nut for urging the seating and camming surfaces toward one another as an incident of relative rotation of the nut and body, and an annular sleeve 13 formed of a hard metal. The sleeve has an inner end portion 38 of frusto-conical form of substantially the same angularity with respect to the axis thereof as that of the seating surface 17 so as to have band sealing engagement therewith and an outer end portion having a frusto-conical outer surface 24 narrowing in a direction away from the body and having a taper angle of 8 degrees; the inner surface of the sleeve includes a frustoconical, outwardly narrowing portion 30 having a taper angle of about 5 degrees with respect to the axis of the sleeve and the sleeve is provided with radially inwardly projecting ribs 31 for embedding in and positively gripping the tube upon constriction of the outer portion of the sleeve by advancement of the nut camming surface thereagainst. The radial thickness of the sleeve over the length of the frusto-conical inner surface portion thereof is substantially less than the thickness of the cylindrical bore portion of the sleeve to facilitate radial contraction of the outer end of the sleeve into sealing and gripping engagement with the tube. As shown, the ribs 31 have inner and outer surfaces 35, 36 extending at angles of 75 degrees and 45 degrees respectively to the axis of the sleeve and the latter includes a cylindrical portion 32 to effectively limit the constriction of the sleeve as that portion is brought into engagement with the outer surface of the tube T.
