Abstract

611,051. Pipe couplings. MILLER, A. W. Aug. 7, 1945, No. 20232. [Class 99 (i)] A pipe coupling employs a screw-threaded sleeve 15, a collar 18 composed of two or more separate segments each tapered on its external surface, and a screw-threaded clamping body 20 to engage the sleeve and embrace the collar such that screwing the clamping body on the sleeve moves the embracing portion longitudinally, thereby imposing radial pressure only on the collar segments, forcing them to contract and grip the pipe end 11 which is placed within the gripping surface of the collar. Fig. 1 shows the sleeve 15 as part of a coupling. member 10 which also has a coned end nipple 16 which fits into a correspondingly flared end 17 of the pipe 11. The segmented collar 18 is tapered on its outer surface to conform with the inner surface of the conical clamping body 20. A spring may be fitted inside the collar to force it open when the clamping body is unscrewed. The other end of the member 10 may be similarly formed or, as shown in Fig. 1, may be threaded at 12 to engage a standard fitting. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement for coupling two pipes, the adjacent ends of which are close together; 16<1> is a doubly coned nipple, 18<1> the segmented collar, and 20<1>, 20<11> the clamping nuts. When a rubber hose, or similar pipe, is to be coupled (Fig. 4), the nipple is not coned but formed as a hollow cylinder 34 with serrations on its external surface, the inner surface of the split collar 37 having corresponding serrations 36 so that the hose, when inserted, shall be firmly gripped on screwing the clamping nut 42. Fig. 6 shows the application to a pipe without a flared end, but having grooves 49 which are engaged by complementary annular teeth 62 on the segmented collar 60. There is no nipple in this case, the end of the pipe 11<1> abutting against the shoulder 54 inside the coupling member 50. The end 70 of the collar is forced into contact with the shoulder 69 and the teeth into the grooves in the pipe on tightening the nut 55. Pipes carrying low-pressure fluid may have plain ends as shown in Fig. 8, but the inner surface of the collar 181 is parallel to the pipe surface and a compressible gasket W provided to seal the joint; a spring band Z surrounds the gasket to improve sealing. A reinforcing nipple with an external annular flange may be fitted.
