Abstract
626,968. Pipe joints. CHOBERT, J. F. G. Aug. 26, 1946, No. 25522. Convention date, May 11, 1945. [Class 99(i)] An automatically-sealing pipe-joint comprises a sleeve 34, Fig. 1, of internal diameter greater than the external diameter of the pipes to be connected and into which the ends 5, 6 of the pipes are inserted so as to provide an annular space in which are housed at least three rigid members 3 and 9 fitted over each pipe-end and a deformable washer 2 disposed between each adiacent two members 3, 9. The fluid acts on the washers 2 to deform them against the surrounding rigid surfaces. As shown, the centre 35 of the sleeve 34 is hexagonal, nuts 36 are provided whereby the washers 2 may be compressed on to the pipes, and the member 9 has an internal collar. 10 for locating the pipe ends centrally in the sleeve 34. The sleeve may have split conical ends 46, Fig. 3, the outer of the rigid members being in the form of split rings 47 which are clamped on to the pipes by tightening nuts 48. In modifications (1) the split rings have conical outer surfaces engaged directly by conical surfaces on the nuts, Fig. 4, (not shown); (2) the ends of the sleeve have internal, conical surfaces engaging conical outer surfaces engaging conical outer surfaces on the split rings, Fig. 5, (not shown); (3) a sleeve 60, Fig. 6, has threaded cones in which are screwed split conical nuts 62 adapted to grip the pipes, and (4) nuts with split conical ends are contracted on to the pipes by engaging conical rings, Figs. 7 and 8. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also unions in which (1) the ends of the sleeve are crimped over the end members 3, a clip being provided to hold the pipes against outward movement; (2) instead of crimping the ends of the sleeve, plugs are screwed into the ends, or plain plugs are screwed over which the sleeve ends are crimped; (3) plugs 21<SP>1</SP>, 21<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 4, (Cancelled), screwed into the ends of a sleeve 20 retain outer sleeves 22<SP>1</SP>, 21<SP>2</SP> having cam grooves so that, by rotating the sleeves, balls 23, 24 are forced towards the pipes as to clamp the union thereto; (4) uncoupling is prevented by balls wedged between conical surfaces and the pipes under the fluid pressure; (5) one end of the sleeve is crimped over and the other is screwthreaded to receive a nut adapted to exert clamping presure on the washers. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
