Abstract

1,267,540. Pipe joints; joint-making packing. GAMAH CORP. 15 July, 1969, No. 35603/69. Headings F2B and F2G. A joint between pipes 11, 12 includes a resilient metal sealing ring 16 of polygonal, e.g. as shown, rectangular, cross-section, which is twisted from its normal shape as the pipes are brought axially together so that only its outer and inner corners 20, 21 engage with overlapped surfaces 18, 19 of the pipe ends to provide sealed engagement, the ring being substantially incompressible in the radial direction. As shown, the joint is surrounded by a clamp 10 tightened to draw the pipes 11, 12 together. Twisting of the seal ring 16 deflects a flange 15 on the pipe 11 radially inwards to seal at S on a flange 14 of the pipe 12. Axial movement of the pipes 11, 12 towards each other may be limited by the side surfaces 16a, 16c of the seal ring 16 abutting surfaces 16b, 16d in the pipe ends, Fig. 3 (not shown), or by the flanges 14, 15 abutting surfaces 14b, 15b on the opposite pipe ends. During assembly and before twisting of the seal ring 16, slight clearance is provided between the seal ring and the pipe surfaces 18, 19, Fig. 2 (not shown). Two seal rings (24, 25), Fig. 4 (not shown), in parallel may be employed.
