Abstract

1,207,959. Joint-making packing; pipe joints. MASHEDER DESIGN STUDIES Ltd. 1 Jan., 1968 [23 Dec., 1966], No. 57750/66. Headings F2B and F2G. A jointing ring 10 for use between pipe ends having tapering inner surfaces 20 and 21, comprises a ring having on its outer periphery two tapering surfaces 26 and 27 and a central peripheral groove 11. The angle of inclination of the surfaces 26 and 27 to the joint axis is slightly less than that of the surfaces 20 and 21, whereby, in use, the edges of the ring initially contact the surfaces 20 and 21 as in Fig. 1 and subsequent tightening of the pipe flanges 22 and 23 causes the ring to flex about the hinge formed by the groove 11 so that the surfaces 26 and 20 and 27 and 21 engage in sealing contact as in Fig. 2. The joint may include a secondary inner jointing ring 24 and an outer jointing ring 25 and a leakage detector may be connected to a groove in the flange faces between the inner and outer jointing rings.
