Abstract

1388894 Joint-making packing; pipe joints UNITED STATES PIPE & FAOUNDRY CO 16 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 12440/72 Headings F2B and F2G In a pipe joint comprising a pipe 3 having a flange 2 secured to one end and an annular elastomeric gasket 6 compressed in use, between the flange and a mating member, e.g. a second pipe flange, the gasket comprises a body portion 7 having on its side facing the flange a first continuous sealing rib 10 of a mean diameter not greater than that of the internal diameter of the flange and a second continuous sealing rib having a means diameter greater than that of the first rib. As shown for a joint between two pipes, the gasket has a rib 10 on both sides and two further pairs of ribs 11, 12, all the ribs being concentric with the gasket axis, equally spaced and of semicircular cross-section. The flanges 2 are secured to the pipes 3 by tapered threads 14 and the gasket, which may be of rubber, has an outside diameter slightly less than the distance between any two diametrically opposed coupling bolts 4. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the ribs 10 are located between the inner surface of the pipes and the threads 14. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the ribs (10) are radially aligned with the threads (14).
