Abstract

1,238,230. Pipe couplings. D. N. MANTON. 3 Feb., 1970 [8 Jan., 1969], No. 1153/69. Heading F2G. A pipe 11, fitted with a composite flange 10 comprising an inner resilient flange 13 and an outer rigid flange 12, is placed in alignment with a similarly fitted pipe, the pipes abutting a lip or lips &c. 15, and the two rigid flanges 12 are secured together by means of bolts, screw threads &c., so that the flanges 12 are urged towards each other whence the mating surfaces 16, 17 coact to urge the inner flanges 13 inwardly to grip the associated pipes. This grip is strengthened by the provision of corrugations, integral with the inner flanges or otherwise, which may take the form of circumferential grooves 19 in the pipe 11 and slits 21 in the inner flange 13, or a corrugated sleeve (25), Figs. 2-5 (not shown), placed between the pipe and the inner flange. The coupling may further be strengthened by metal inserts (26) in both inner flanges 13 arranged to abut one another, Fig. 3 (not shown). A ring (28), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be held by grooves in both the pipe 11 and the abutment 18 of the outer flange 12 to limit axial spread of the resilient inner flange 13. In cases where the pipes 11 are flexible a tubular supporting member may be inserted into both bores and may further be provided with a circumferential rib to separate the pipes and replace the lips 15.
