Abstract

1,072,466. Pipe couplings. J.B.H..PRODUCTS & CO. Ltd. May 24, 1966 [June 14, 1965], No. 24987/65. Heading F2G. The Specification claims a ball and socket joint similar to that claimed in Claim 1 of Specification 956,713 but in which one of the thrust rings 17 (made of metal) is provided with two sealing rings, one 17b engaging the fruato-spherical surface of one pipe 10 and the other 17e engaging the cylindrical inner surface of the other pipe 12. The other thrust ring 18 (made of plastic) has a metal support ring 31 adjacent the cylindrical opening 33 which prevents the ring 13 from distorting under high temperatures and pressures. The flange ring 20 may be locked in position by opposed set-screws 34 and 35 which can be tightened into a groove 40 on the outside of the pipe 12. In other embodiments (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) the outer sealing ring may be located alternatively in a groove formed by cutting away the outer rim of the thrust ring 17 and/or the flange ring may be in the form of a radial flange which bolts on to a mating flange formed around the end of the pipe 12. In the latter instance the flange 19 of the ring 18 is omitted. Specification 1,003,540 also is referred to.
