Abstract
1,033,121. Seals; pipe Joints. BIR-VAC Ltd. May 12, 1964 [April 24, 1963], No. 16203/63. Headings F2B and F2G. [Also in Division F1] In a vacuum system including members, e.g. 1, 13, joined together, a pair of spaced-apart sealing rings, e.g. 15, is located between and contacted by the members and the space between the sealing rings is connected by means of a line 32 to a vapour pump 28 for evacuating the space thereby minimizing leakage of air into the interiors of the members. The system comprises a two-part vacuum tank 1, 13 connected to a vapour pump 23 in series with the pump 28 which is backed up by a rotary pump 34. Valves are provided at 31, 33, 35 and a pressure gauge at 29. Sealing rings are provided between flanged parts at 4, 10, 15 and 25, the spaces between the rings being joined to line 32 by branch lines 32A, 32B, 32C and 32D. Heating means 36 are associated with the pumps 23, 28. Oil vapour passing upwardly from the pump 23 is condensed on arresters 17, 18 which are filled with liquid nitrogen.
