Abstract
1375942 Joint-making packing; pressurevessel cover REVERTEX Ltd 5 Jan 1973 [7 Jan 1972] 901/72 Headings F2B and F2P Sealing means between two members, e.g. an autoclave 1 and a cover 3 therefor, having opposed joint faces comprises an annular channel 5, 6 formed in at least one of the faces, two resilient concentric sealing rings 10, 11 disposed between the joint faces with one ring on each side of the channel, and a conduit 7, 8 leading from the channel through one of the members to a source of pressure or vacuum. The rings 10, 11 are of rubber and abut shoulders 22, 23 formed on the joint flanges 2 and 4 and the conduit 7, 8 is connected by a pipe 9 to the pressure or vacuum source. The cover 3 is closed by a cover 12 and channels 15 and 16 are formed in opposed portions 13 and 14 of the covers 12 and 3 respectively. Sealing rings 19 and 20 are arranged one on each side of the channels 15, 16 abutting shoulders (not shown) and a bore 17 in the cover 12 connects the channel 16 through a pipe 18 with a source of pressure or vacuum. In use, when the reaction mixture in the autoclave interior 21 is at or above atmospheric pressure the channels are subjected to a pressure at least as great as that of the reaction mixture. When the mixture is at sub-atmospheric pressure a partial vacuum is applied to the channels. The pressure in the channels may be varied in accordance with variation in the reaction mixture pressure and the fluid supplied may be such that in the event of a leak, it inhibits any reaction taking place or dilutes or nullifies the effect of the contents of the vessel. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a V-section channel (26) is formed in one member (24) only.
