Abstract

1294341 Shaft seals ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 30 Jan 1970 [31 Jan 1969] 5412/69 Heading F2B Sealing means for a shaft 11 comprises a housing 12 having two spaced separable flanges 13 and 14 respectively for the shaft, a sleeve 17 slidable within the housing and having one end located in an annular space 25 surrounding the flange 13, and packing rings 19 which are disposed between the flange 13 and a shoulder 18 on the sleeve and compressed by a spring 20 located between the flange 14 and the shoulder 18. The rings 19 are further compressed, in use, by the pressure of the sealed fluid acting on the sleeve 17. The flange 13 is part of a removable cover plate 22 sealed to the rest of the housing by a gasket 24. Rotation of the sleeve is prevented by a key (not shown) thereon engaging a keyway (not shown) in the housing. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, washers 57 and 58, which may be of P.T.F.E., prevent extrusion of the packing rings 55, which may be a mixture of P.T.F.E. and asbestos. The packing rings 55 may be precompressed by temporarily placing an abutment plate (not shown) between the rings and the plate 51, tightening the latter until a predetermined precompression of the rings is effected and then removing the plate 51 and the abutment plate and reassembling the gland without the abutment plate.
