687,955. Joint-making packing. FIREPROOF TANKS, Ltd. June 6, 1951 [June 20, 1950], No. 15405/50. Class 122(iii) [Also in Group XXIX] In a mounting for an opening 13 in a flexible fuel tank 11 a gasket 12 of flexible material is fitted around the opening and disposed between a backing plate 16 inside the tank and a cover plate 18 outside it, the gasket and cover plate being respectively formed with complementary projections 14 and recesses 19 concentrically bored for fastening bolts 22 which when tightened, compress the gasket between the backing plate and the cover plate to form a fluid seal with the latter. The recesses 19 are shallower than the projections 14 so that the latter are compressed laterally in the recesses and around the bolts 22. In a modification for an inspection cover over a slit-type opening in the tank, the gasket is formed by adjacent portions disposed on each side of the slit and united at each end thereof, each portion having projections engaging recesses in a cover plate extending over both portions, the gasket being compressed as before between the cover plate and a backing plate inside the tank by bolts passing through the projections and complementary recesses. The adjacent edges of the gasket portions are formed with lips that are together received in a groove in the cover plate.
