Abstract
982,975. Joint-making packing; covers for resisting fluid pressure. GEARTIGHT UNIONS Ltd. March 23, 1961 [April 6, 1960; Feb. 1, 1961], Nos. 12122/60 and 3742/61. Headings F2B and F2P. A standpipe opening is sealed by a body 20, 21, Fig. 2, locked in the opening by means 23 and carrying a metallic seal 25 having a continuous flexible wall with an outwardly convex sealing surface 28 which engages the wall 24 of the opening and is forced thereon by pressure fluid acting on the inner surface of the seal. The seal is formed at its inner end with an outwardly-turned lip 27a resting against the body and is clamped at its outer end between the two portions of the body which is held in the opening by locking cams 23. Pressure fluid enters the annular space between the seal and the part 21 through bores 29. The seal is pressed or spun from sheet material and may be coated with electrolytically deposited soft iron. In a modification, Fig. 1, the body consists of three parts 1, 2, 3 bolted together. The parts 2, 3 provide cup-shaped locking surfaces 7, 8 for primary and secondary seals 10, 9 welded to the surfaces at 12. The seals are formed at their free ends with convex sealing lips 9a, 10a. A bore 14 is provided in the wall of the opening between the seals and is connected through a pipe 15 to a leakage detector.
