[Also in Division F2] A seal to provide a fluid tight joint between a hatch cover 11 and coaming 24 comprises a rigid channel member 10 on the cover, a gasket assembly in the channel including a compressible core 16 of rubber-like material and a shield 17 of flexible substantially incompressible material, the shield having an outwardly projecting outer surface 18 extending between the side walls 12, 13 of the channel and having a mean lateral length 20 greater than the spacing between the side walls, and an angle iron 23 welded to the coaming having its corner 26 engageable by the other surface 18 to compress the core 16 and laterally press the shield into engagement with the side walls.
