856,494. Pipe joints. AEROQUIP CORPORATION. Sept. 29, 1958 [Oct. 31, 1957], No. 31092/58. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXV] A joint for interconnecting conduits 10, 11 comprises opposed, annular flanges 12, 13 mounted on the pipes and having parallel, opposed, frusto-conical faces 32, 34 spaced from each other, one of the flanges 13 having an annular projection 27 extending outwardly 8 from the inner circumference of its frustoconical face 24 to define a cylindrical shoulder 25 facing outwardly from the axis of the flanges, and the other flange 12 having an annular projection 35 extending outwardly from the outer circumference of its frustoconical face 32 to define a cylindrical shoulder 33 facing inwardly toward said axis, the flanges having annular rabbets 38, 41 formed therein for accommodating the projections. A gasket 46 in the space between the opposed faces has inner and outer frusto-conical side surfaces 47, 48 and annular end surfaces 50, 49 defining the outer and inner circumferences of the side surfaces, the latter being in contact with the respective frusto-conical faces of the flanges. There is clamping means for applying axial pressure to the flanges, and the dimensions of the flanges and the gasket are such that the gasket substantially fills the space between the opposed faces when the two flanges have been drawn together. As shown, the flanges 12, 13 have outer frusto-conical faces 20 and are clamped together by a radially contractible band 60, and, initially, the side surfaces of the gasket, which is of aluminium, copper or annealed stainless steel, have an angle of inclination greater than that of the frustoconical faces 24, 32 of the flanges.
