Abstract
1,262,627. Pipe couplings; shaft couplings; bolting. T. R. CASSEL. 21 April, 1970, No. 18900/70. Headings F2G, F2H and F2U. A coupling for fluid lines, drive shafts, scaffolding &c. includes two sections 10, 12, Fig. 1, the latter, having a radially deformed part 14, fits within the former and the sections 10, 12 are secured together by an assembly which draws the pipes together in the area of the deformation and so sets up compressive and tensile stresses in sections 10, 12 respectively in a circumferential direction. As shown in Fig. 2 the assembly may be a self tapping screw 22 which engages hole 32 in the section 10 and deforms the sections 10, 12 to match the contour of a plate 24. Alternatively a nut (36) and bolt (38), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be used, or an ordinary screw (22) engage a threaded extruded flange (48), Fig. 6 (not shown), in the section 10 or several assemblies of the type shown in Fig. 2 are used around the periphery of the pipe sections. As shown in Fig. 5 a U-bolt 40 and plate 42 with a protrusion 44 may be used. In Fig. 13 section 70 has a separate threaded apertured plate 76, and, when engaged by bolt 82, lip 74 is drawn towards outside section 72. Plate 76 is received in a rectangular slot cut into the section 70, there being a V-shaped notch (78), Fig. 12 (not shown), cut at the inside end of the slot to accommodate the expansion of the section 70 on securing the coupling. Alternatively, Fig. 8, 9, 10 (not shown), the separate plate 76 may be replaced with a section (50) like the section 10 of Fig. 6 except that there are two axially aligned extruded threaded flanges (58) receiving bolts (62), (64). The section (50) has an axially extending slot (68) in its periphery to accommodate its expansion when the assembly is tightened, Fig. 13 shows an assembly like that of Figs. 8, 9, 10 except that the head of the bolt directly contacts the outer pipe section. In Fig. 17 (not shown) a plate (125) inside the inner pipe section is engaged by a bolt (123) and draws deformations (119), (121) on the inner pipe section (113) towards the outer pipe section (115). In Fig. 16 (not shown) bolts (110), (114) which are circumferentially separated engage threaded extruded flanges located in radially inwardly extending deformations in the inner pipe section and draw them outwards on securing the coupling. In Fig. 20 a bolt with a head 136, see detail Fig. 26 (not shown), following the shape of inner pipe section 130 has a nut 142 which may seat directly on section 132 or on to band 138 as shown. Rotation of the nut draws the sections together and its external end may be slotted to permit rotation by a screwdriver. Band 138 may be replaced by a plate (176), Fig. 24, 25 (not shown), similar to the plate 24 in Fig. 2 in appearance and function. Fig. 11, 15 (not shown), illustrate tangs (66) and a plate. (88) respectively which fit on the outer pipe section to secure the bolts, used in the assemblies, to the said section. Similarly the plate (176) may have a D-shaped aperture and the bolt passing therethrough the same section so that they may be secured together.
